How I built a digital product during nap times - and how you can too
There’s a unique kind of silence that falls over the house when your baby finally drifts off to sleep. It’s peaceful, yes—but also a ticking clock. As a mum, you know you’ve got anywhere from 20 minutes to (if you’re lucky) a full hour before you’re back in the thick of snacks, cuddles, and chaos.
During one of those golden nap windows, I started something that would completely change my business—and my life.
I built my first digital product.
It wasn’t perfect. I didn’t have a big team, a flashy website, or even a clear plan beyond helping other mums like me. But I had an idea, a desire to make an income from home, and a baby monitor by my side.
If you're reading this, chances are you're juggling similar things: the constant hum of motherhood, the itch to build something that matters, and the dream of flexible income that fits around family life.
So, here’s the real story behind how I made it happen—and how you can too.
Why Digital Products Work for Mums
Let’s start with the why. Why digital products? Why not freelance, or coaching, or a handmade shop?
I chose digital products because:
They’re flexible. I could work in bursts—nap times, evenings, weekends.
They’re scalable. One product, unlimited buyers. No restocking, no packing orders at midnight.
They’re low-risk. No inventory. No upfront costs. Just my time and my knowledge.
They’re empowering. I was finally creating something that had long-term value.
The real magic is this: once a digital product is made, it can continue to sell without you having to be on all the time. That’s the dream for so many mums—earning while being present.
The Mindset Shift That Made It Possible
The biggest hurdle wasn’t tech. It wasn’t time. It was me.
I had to stop believing I needed a “perfect” setup or 8 uninterrupted hours. I had to start believing that progress, even in tiny pockets of time, was still progress.
I also had to stop comparing myself to other business owners who weren’t juggling school drop-offs, teething toddlers, or endless laundry.
My path looked different—and that was okay.
So if you’re waiting for the right time, here’s your reminder: there’s never a perfect time. But there is right now, and that’s more than enough to get started.
Step One: I Chose a Problem to Solve
Before I ever opened Canva or typed a single word, I did this:
I thought about what problem I could solve for my audience.
Not just what I wanted to create—but what they actually needed.
This is where so many new creators go wrong. They jump straight into content creation without checking that the idea has demand. But when you’re a busy mum, you don’t have time to waste on trial and error.
Ask yourself:
What are other mums constantly asking me about?
What do I find easy that others struggle with?
What’s something I’ve figured out that could save others time or stress?
Once I had that clarity, the rest came together much faster.
(Need help with this step? My ebook Profit While You Parent walks you through how to choose the right product based on your strengths and your audience’s needs.)
Step Two: I Outlined the Product in 15 Minutes
I used a super simple method. I opened a Google Doc and asked:
What do they need to know first?
What do they need to do second?
What outcome do I want to help them reach by the end?
That became my outline. No fluff, just the essentials.
Here’s a secret: you don’t need a huge product to get results. What people want is clarity and simplicity. A 20-page guide that solves one big problem will often sell better than a 200-page book filled with overwhelm.
Step Three: I Created It Using Templates
Designing from scratch? No thanks.
I used a Canva template for my ebook. I picked one that felt clean, calming, and easy to read. I swapped in my colours, added my content, and suddenly—it looked like something I’d paid a designer for.
This step felt so validating. Seeing my ideas come to life in a beautiful format gave me the motivation to keep going, even when mum life got loud again.
Step Four: I Priced and Packaged It
Here’s the mistake I nearly made: pricing too low because I felt "new."
But I remembered this: I was solving a real problem, and that has value.
So I chose a price that felt fair for both my audience and for the time I’d poured into the product. I also created a mockupusing a free tool so it looked like a polished product when I shared it online.
(Inside Profit While You Parent, I break down pricing strategies that actually convert and walk you through how to package your product for maximum impact.)
Step Five: I Launched with a Simple Plan
No big countdown. No complicated funnel. Just a few Instagram posts, a couple of emails, and lots of honesty.
I shared why I made the product, how it could help, and what was inside. I talked about building something in nap times, and mums got it. Because they were in that same stage too.
I made my first sale within hours. And then another. And another.
It wasn’t magic. It was just messaging that resonated, because it came from my story and solved a real need.
The Power of Nap Time Businesses
The truth is, I didn’t just create an ebook. I created a system that allowed me to:
Work in short, focused bursts
Use tools to simplify and speed up the process
Build a product once and sell it again and again
And I want you to know—you can absolutely do the same.
You don’t need to be a tech whiz. You don’t need to be wildly confident. You don’t even need childcare.
You just need a clear process, a few good tools, and the belief that starting small is still starting.
